Volunteer Profile

Name: Waimaria

Tell us a bit about yourself:
I am originally from the lower part of the North Island in New Zealand, a small town called Paraparaumu and moved to Brisbane when I was 10 years old. I started volunteering at Furry Friends ARQ a few months ago and am now helping out in the social media team. I have over 7 years marketing experience, with formal qualifications in marketing and graphic design. My passion for animals has been around since I was a kid and one of my favourite marketing roles was working at a zoo. I had some amazing experiences such as seeing otters and kiwis up close; as well as feeding the crocodiles and tamarin monkeys.

What is your position at Furry Friends Animal Rescue Queensland?
I volunteer as a Marketing Coordinator in the social media team.

When did you start volunteering at Furry Friends?
February 2019

Why did you start volunteering?
My cat Zaza is a rescue animal; I found him online in a shelter in Bundaberg and he had been there for around 2 weeks, we made the 9 hour return car ride from Brisbane the next day to pick him up.

Finding Zaza has brought so much joy to our lives and he is the reason that I wanted to give back and start volunteering for an animal rescue organisation such as Furry Friends ARQ.

What do you find the most rewarding about volunteering about Furry Friends?
I enjoy being part of such a worthwhile cause and seeing visible changes such as new adoptions that have happened.

What are the different ways in which people can help Furry Friends?
There’s lots of ways to support Furry Friends ARQ such as following social media pages and sharing content to others, volunteering, fostering and just engaging with the organisation as a whole.
